Manningham had been using a software system for a number of years and wanted to look at the options available on the market before making further investment.
Using the h&b group as a resource for information, several software suppliers were consulted with many similarities between their initial systems. Manningham arranged for introductory demos and visits to existing users, with each of the short listed suppliers. However, according to Andrew Tomlinson Chairman at Manningham, it was Border Merchants “personable approach to business, combined with sophisticated software that impressed and convinced everyone at all levels of the business, to make the final investment in Border’s CounterAct Software.”
Andrew, explains the challenges. “We needed software that could give us consistent data integrity, at the touch of a button, providing information that was easy to access. One of the main issues we had was that our branches were not linked together, making it difficult to give customers consistent information across the multiple sites. We needed a system that everyone in the business, from accounts to sales, wanted to use and one that would reduce manual intervention, increase access and accountability.”
Border Merchant’s CounterAct software provided Manningham with the solution it needed.
CounterAct is a dedicated software available from Border Merchants Systems, one of the UK’s leading software suppliers to the building merchant trade. It is a complete software solution for managing all aspects of business and is specifically designed to maximise efficiency and improve business management. This includes sales analysis, stock control, estimates through to full accounts and management.
Manningham installed a new CounterAct server in 2013. The system came preloaded with existing company data to ease the installation process, making “the daunting prospect of integrating the new system effortless”, according to Andrew.
Outstanding Training - Andrew explains the steps involved in the initial set-up; “Border’s team of dedicated technical support gave us six full days of on-site training across the entire team from Accounts to Sales Personnel. After installation, we received a further 2 days training to support any issues that arose. We are now supported on an on-going basis via a screen share system which is able to immediately resolve any queries we may have.”
Improved Performance - CounterAct has proved invaluable to every aspect of business.
“The flexibility and versatility of the system is already showing great benefits across the business from the Accounts Packages to the Front End System; CounterAct is flexible, quick and easy to use, giving instant information such as product searches, at the click of a button.

Asset Management – Stock and Assets are automatically depreciated across the entire business without the need for manual input. “This has saved valuable time and greatly improved the accuracy” added Andrew.
Improved ‘Dashboard’ technology – Manningham is one of the first customers in the UK to benefit from CounterActs new improved dashboards. Dashboard is a new, customer friendly screen (or interface?), based on an Outlook style. This makes the software even more user friendly.
